High Holidays with Jewish Life at Duke Each year, the Duke community celebrates the High Holidays with Jewish Life at Duke. For Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, both Reform and Conservative-Style services are offered at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life. We also offer Tashlich at Duke Gardens. Additionally, we offer free holiday meals for students including Rosh Hashanah dinner, pre-fast dinner, and Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast at the Freeman Center. Project Directors Project Directors for Duke Experiential Orientation experiences have the opportunity to lead community-building orientation projects that will become part of the tapestry of Duke orientation. Projects will create an inclusive environment where new members of the Duke community can build healthy relationships, learn about campus culture, and begin to acclimate to Duke. Student Prevention Modules Data Sexual Assault Prevention: Mandatory Online Modules All incoming undergraduate and graduate students are required to complete an online course: Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (SAPU) and Sexual Assault Prevention for Graduate Students (SAPG). SAPU and SAPG provide detailed information about the importance of values and the aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships. The trainings, which are evidence-based and tailored for the specific audience, also discuss decisions regarding sexual activity and sexual assault. Shruti Desai (she, her, hers) currently serves as the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs for Student Engagement at Duke University where she leads a dynamic team committed to identity consciousness through programming and storytelling, leadership, fraternity and sorority life, professional development, and marketing and communications. Prior to that, she served as the Chief of Staff for the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to her role at WashU she served Assistant Vice President at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL where she oversaw Title IX, Counseling Services, and Residential Life. Shruti held professional roles in Residence Life at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Kansas, and Texas Tech University.
Shruti has served as adjunct faculty at the George R. Warren Brown School of Social Work and Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis and the co-chair elect of NASPA’s Asian Pacific Islander Knowledge Community. Most recently, she co-authored Identity-Conscious Supervision in Student Affairs: Building Relationship & Transforming Institutions, which was published by Routledge.
Shruti’s research examines resilience in women of color in Senior Student Affairs Officer roles. Shruti has worked to lead systemic change for LGBT and individuals of color for students and professional staff. Shruti presents regionally and nationally on identity conscious supervision, creating supportive cultures for marginalized identities, building a culture of assessment, and resilience. Shruti is an alumnus of the Social Justice Training Institute (SJTI) as well as a past faculty and intern with SJTI. Her passion lies around getting beyond the false binary of race in America, examining identity as intersections of power and privilege and data as storytelling.

Kashrut Policy The Freeman Center Cafe operates under rabbinical supervision by Duke’s Campus Rabbi, who serves as the Rav HaMachshir and mashgiach/mashgicha. The rabbi’s office is located in the same building as the dining facility. The following policies are adhered to at the Freeman Center Cafe to ensure kosher standards: All meat is all Glatt Kosher. The facility has separate meat and dairy kitchens with clear markings, and only one kitchen at a time is permitted to be in operation. As required by the The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or “Clery Act”, Duke alerts students and employees in a timely manner of crimes that pose a serious or continuing threat to the Duke community.
