At Duke Dining, we believe sustainability is holistic. From procurement to disposal, all stages of the sustainability journey are equally important.

Duke Dining recognizes that the modern food system often pursues efficiencies and profit at the expense of environmental health, community well-being, and fair economic relationships. Faced with this reality, we eagerly take on the role of potential catalyst in this system. We believe being “sustainable” means operating deliberately—being intentional and thoughtful in how we feed the Duke community. Education and engagement are essential parts of our operational strategy and sustainability success.

With more than 30,000 employees, thousands of students, and tens of thousands of visitors, Duke University and Health System generate significant demand for transportation. Meeting that need requires the use of public transit and alternative modes of transportation. Vehicle use contributes to traffic congestion, high infrastructure costs, and pollution. At Duke, we are striving to increase the convenience and incentives for commuters using alternative modes of transportation in order to achieve carbon neutrality, preserve green space and prevent congestion.

Move-In Cardboard Collection:

When you arrive to your dorm, please locate the large orange corrals outside your dorm (they are behind the buildings). These corrals are there for you to place your cardboard after unpacking. Please break down boxes and throw trash in cans inside. Prior to students' arrival, Duke Recycles, will collect all cardboard from these designated areas.

Move-Out for Charity Program:

Each spring, for the two-week period of move-out, Student Affairs Facility Planning and Operations partners with TROSA and Goodwill to accept donations of clothes, shoes, furniture, appliances and many other vital resources. Items students contribute during this period are redistributed to the local community through the partner organizations.

Desk side Mini-Bin Program:

Duke has introduced a deskside/mini-bin program to divert more recyclables away from the landfill. In this system, the larger blue bin is for mixed recyclable material, and the smaller black attachment is for trash. Users are asked to empty their individual containers into a larger, centralized one as needed. For more information or to request a service, call (919) 660-1448.

Clean-Out Bins:

High-volume recycling bins are available by request for clean-outs, faculty retirements and/or intra-campus moves. For more information or to request a service, call (919) 660-1448.

Green Purchasing:

The Duke Green Purchasing Program helps Duke purchasers and employees make environmentally responsible choices. By conserving resources, preventing pollution, and opting for safe materials, we can make a positive impact on our environment and community. Our purchasers take into consideration the impact of products on the environment and human health, giving preference to more environmentally friendly products when quality and cost performance are equal or superior.
