Originally from rural Pennsylvania, MJ graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with degrees in sociology and psychology. At IUP she was a resident assistant and production manager for the student newspaper, The Penn. After spending several years working with teens, she returned to residence life as a residence coordinator at Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA.
Finding her calling in residence life MJ pursued a M.Ed. in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina and has worked at the University of Arizona, Clemson University, and Hollins University. While at Hollins, MJ pursued studies at Averett University, where she received an MBA. Her love of housing assignments led her to Duke in July 2005. MJ (she/her) provides leadership, management and direction for Housing Assignments and the planning function of Housing and Residence Life (HRL). Housing assignments are like puzzles to her, and she enjoys working with students to find the correct fit.
MJ and her partner, Brian, who also works at Duke, have called Durham home for 18+ years. Besides dedicating her time, energy, and finances to two beagles and two cats, MJ enjoys reading, gardening, fishing, and outdoor activities.
