Tips for Finding a Roommate
- Finding a roommate: Many students find roommates at Duke through their program or school. Programs often create group chats or channels for incoming students to connect with each other and find/post for roommates.
- Other ways to find a roommate:
- DukeList: DukeList is an internal listing service for members of the Duke community. There is a Housing section of the site where you can post for housing.
- Facebook: There are a number of Facebook groups that are not offically affiliated with Duke, but where many students search for roommates and housing. This group is most active recently (as of July 2024). This page is smaller and private.
- Make sure you meet with your potential roommate in person or video chat if meeting in person is not an option.
- Questions to ask a roommate before you sign a lease
- Make sure all roommates’ names are included on the lease. If your name is not on the lease, you do not have legal rights as a tenant.
- Duke recommends creating a roommate agreement before you move in together. This is a way to help you navigate conflict that naturally comes up while living together.
