Schools and Childcare
Durham Public Schools
For children ages 5-18. Durham Public Schools is Durham’s free public school system. The Duke International Student Center has an introductory guide to public schools in Durham that outlines enrolling your student, required vaccines, enrolling in English as a Second Language programs, and more.
Childcare
For children under 5 years of age. Childcare is not subsidized in the U.S., so families should expect to pay for childcare for children who are not yet school aged.The Graduate School at Duke does offer a childcare subsidy for PhD students. There are a range of options from ages 12 weeks up to 5 years of age. Care can be full time, half days, or 2-3 days per week. The Duke International Student Center’s introduction to childcare centers and preschools in the area is a good starting point for parents who are new to the area.
Independent Schools
There are a number of independent, or private, schools in the Durham area. Independent schools charge tuition for attendance. The Triangle Independent School Consortium has a directory of some of the private schools in the Triangle.
