The Duke Community Standard

The Duke Community Standard: A Guide for Students governs all conduct for undergraduate students and the resolution processes for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.

Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment & Related Misconduct (PPDHRM)

The PPDHRM is the umbrella policy at Duke that prohibits discrimination and harassment based on 13 protected characteristics, as well as sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and retaliation. The Policy applies to all members of the Duke community (faculty, staff and students) and is maintained and administered by the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE). The Policy includes definitions of prohibited conduct, resources and reporting options, and information about supportive measures.

Procedures for Responding to Discrimination & Harassment Reports Involving Student Respondents (Student Procedures)

These Procedures outline the reporting, investigation, and resolution processes for cases where a Duke student (undergraduate, graduate, professional, etc.) is alleged to have engaged in prohibited conduct under the PPDHRM, including sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. The Student Procedures include information about supportive measures and adaptable resolution of concerns. Note: Formal complaints of Title IX Sexual Harassment are addressed under the Title IX Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures, below.

Title IX Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures (Title IX Procedures)

These Procedures apply to formal complaints of Title IX Sexual Harassment, as that term is defined in the PPDHRM. These Procedures apply where the formal complaint is made after August 14, 2020 and where the alleged Title IX Sexual Harassment is directed toward a person in the United States, occurs in Duke’s programs or activities, and allegedly is perpetrated by any member of the Duke community. The Title IX Procedures include information about supportive measures and adaptable resolution of concerns.

Procedures for Responding to Discrimination and Harassment Reports Involving Duke Faculty and Non-Faculty (Staff) Respondents (Employee Procedures)

These Procedures outline the reporting, investigation, and resolution processes for cases where a Duke employee (faculty or staff) is alleged to have engaged in prohibited conduct as defined in the PPDHRM. Note: Formal complaints of Title IX Sexual Harassment are addressed under the Title IX Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures, above.
