Where can I live next year?

  • First year students will live in their East Campus residence hall as non-resident members of their Quad,
  • Sophomores will live “in Quad” in their West Campus Quad connection.
  • Juniors will live in their Quad or in Hollows/300 Swift.
  • Seniors may choose to live in their Quad, Hollows/300 Swift, or off campus.
  • Juniors and seniors will retain Quad affiliation regardless of where they choose to live and will keep that affiliation even after they graduate.
  • The connection between each East Campus residence hall and its affiliated Quad will remain the same year after year.

Quad Descriptions

Home to approximately 420 sophomores, juniors, and seniors, Craven Quad was originally built in the 1930s and renovated in 2019. Craven Quad has a Residence Coordinator, an Academic Guide, 1 Graduate Resident and 12 Resident Assistants, and is home to two Living Learning Communities: Ethics and Global Citizenship and SPIRE.

Built in the late 1960s and renovated in 2016, Edens Quad is home to approximately 530 students. Edens offers multiple kitchens and common spaces, e-print, laundry, a fitness room, yoga space, gaming area, and virtual reality room. Edens Quad houses Duke's Selective Living Groups, which are housing organizations that students can request to join as sophomores, juniors, or seniors, and live with during their junior and senior years. Edens Quad has a Residence Coordinator, an Academic Guide, two Graduate Residents and 15 Resident Assistants.

Commons, Kitchenettes & Restrooms

Common areas, kitchens, and study areas are available in each of the seven buildings that make up Edens Quad. Several buildings in Edens have "lower" sections (bottom two floors) and "upper" sections (top two floors), and each section has dedicated common areas for residents who live nearby.

What is unique about Edens?

The Bolt is a high-tech gaming suite is located in Edens 1C. The game room is designed with multiple stations and seating areas for group and individual online play. There are eight screens, including four in a quad arrangement; 10 gaming computers; and a variety of gaming consoles, including one Wii U, four XBox 1s, and four Playstation 4s.

The Bolt VR is a space that features cutting edge Virtual Reality technology. It includes a custom-built PC and the latest version of the HTC VIVE. Powered by SteamVR, Vive offers room-scale experiences enabled by 360˚ motion tracking and the chaperone guidance system. Vive gives the user the experience of total immersion in virtual reality.

Few Quad was built in the late 1930s, renovated in 2008, and is home to approximately 440 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Located at the heart of West Campus, Few Quad offers several kitchens, study rooms, laundry, and e-print stations. Few Quad has a Residence Coordinator, an Academic Guide, one Graduate Resident and 12 Resident Assistants, and is home to two Living Learning Communities: Baldwin Scholars and Cognitive Neuroscience and Law. Few Quad is one of our gender-inclusive housing options, which includes all-gender rooms and bathrooms.

Opened in 2019, Hollows Quad is the newest residence hall on West Campus, housing 486 students in two buildings of suite-style living areas. Each suite features an en suite kitchenette, common area, one to two full bathrooms (depending on suite size), and single room options. Suites range in size from two to five students. Hollows Quad brings together most-up-to-date features in a Duke residence hall and provides more living choices for student housing on West Campus. Hollows Quad has a Residence Coordinator, an Academic Guide, two Graduate Residents and 15 Resident Assistants.

  • There is limited storage in the bathroom vanity.
  • HRL will provide a shower curtain at move-in. Students are responsible for cleaning and/or replacement of shower curtains during the semester. 
  • HRL will provide initial supplies for restrooms (soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue). Students are responsible for providing these supplies for the remainder of the year. 

What is unique about Hollows?

  • Just like other quads on West Campus, Hollows Quad will remain open during Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks, and will close for Winter Break.
  • In the instance of any room change, students must go through the reassignment process. This is particularly important for Hollows Quad due to your access being tied to your DukeCard.
  • Suites are not gender specific and assigned students can determine mixed gender or gender-neutral. Students will not be assigned to an opposite gender suite unless specifically requested by the student and residents of the suite.
  • Residents will be sharing individual space within a shared space, so it is important for residents to determine how they'd like to manage those spaces together.
  • Resident Assistants are assigned to live in a suite with other residents.
  • All suites are not identical.

Named after President Nannerl Overholser Keohane, Keohane Quad is home approximately 480 sophomores, juniors, and seniors and McClendon Tower, which has dining, social and study spaces. Keohane Quad (buildings 4A, 4B, and 4D) was opened in 2002 with the intent to link the Gothic revival architecture of West Campus to Edens Quad and featured McClendon Tower. The fourth wing of Keohane Quad (building 4E) was opened in 2012. Keohane offers six kitchens, study areas, laundry rooms, and e-print. Located in Keohane 4B, The Mosaic (4B401SEM) is Duke’s first residential space for prayer, practice, and meditation. Keohane Quad has a Residence Coordinator, an Academic Guide, two Graduate Residents, 15 Resident Assistants, and two Living Learning Communities: Eruditio et Religio and Mitchell-White.

Swift Quad is comprised of 300 Swift, 301 Swift, and Smart Home. 300 Swift, acquired in December of 2016, is a 400+ bed apartment-style building available to juniors and seniors, who want to enjoy the trappings of off-campus living, while still residing in on-campus housing. Apartments come fully furnished and in an array of styles, including: 4-person, 2-bedroom 2-bath apartments; 2-person, 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartments; and 1-person, 1-bath studios apartments.  All apartments open to interior hallways and are accessible by three elevators and several stairwells throughout the building. 

301 Swift apartments are a 36 bed community dedicated to graduate and professional students who also want apartment living while having the convenience of on-campus housing. Each apartment comes fully furnished as well. All apartments open to exterior walkways.

The main unique quality of Swift Quad is simply its location. Nowhere else on campus can you be within walking distance of two places of worship (including a kosher dining option), tons of great local and national restaurants, two grocery stores, a major highway, and several bus lines (both Duke and Durham), all while living on-campus.

Wannamaker Quad is home to approximately 230 residents and offers two common rooms, two kitchens, two laundry rooms, two study rooms, a yoga studio, and an ePrint station. The building was renovated in summer 2016 and is almost 100% wheelchair accessible. Wannamaker Quad shares a Residence Coordinator and Academic Guide with Keohane and has its own Assistant Residence Coordinator as well as 6 Resident Assistants.

Commons, kitchens & Study Areas

There are two large common areas on the ground floor of Wannamaker. One Common Room contains full screen TVs, a communal kitchen, a Nintendo Wii, and a piano. The other Common Room contains full screen TVs, a communal kitchen, a Ping Pong table, and a massage chair. There are also two study rooms with wall to wall white boards for student use. There is also a Yoga Studio for residents to meditate, dance, and work out in.

What is unique about Wannamaker?

Wannamaker is the closest dorm to K-Ville and the athletics facilities. Wannamaker also has a Yoga Studio for residential use to promote fitness and wellbeing.
