Janie Long Safe Study Space Janie Long was the director of the CSGD from 2006-2014. In her time here, she dedicated herself to making Duke a safer space for everyone. Because of Janie Long, the CSGD was able to secure its large and prominent space in the Bryan Center, and why Lavender Graduation and Coming Out Day became such beloved traditions. She subsequently served as Duke’s most high-profile LGBTQ+ administrator, the Associate Vice Provost in the Office of Undergraduate Education, until retiring in 2021. Dean Deb oversees Housing and Residence Life, including both professional and student residential staff, Housing Assignments, our first-year and upperclass campus offices, as well as our connections to many residentially based academic programs. She has a B.A. in Health Education from Montclair State University and an M.Ed. in Higher Education with an emphasis in Counseling from the University of Georgia. Deb has a passion for equity and inclusion work and most recently was part of two research efforts; “The Duke Social Relationships Project” (DSRP)and the “You @ Duke” Resilience study. She helped create the residentially based Sophomore Year Experience (SYE) at Duke as a result of the data derived from the DSRP.
Deb is proud to be a first-generation college student, born to an immigrant who arrived to the US from Sicily in 1948. She enjoys being with family, gardening, woodworking, jewelry making, watching movies, traveling, and just relaxing with good friends and a bottle of wine.

Dani (she/her/hers) manages the overall operation of West Campus including supervision of the residential staff, planning and facilitation of the Sophomore Year Experience (SYE) program, collaboration with our Academic Guides program, and management of facilities and budgets. She has a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas and M.Ed in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University. Originally from Austin, TX, Dani has now happily made her home in North Carolina with her partner and family and is still on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe.
