Learn everything you need to know about Ramadan 1444 | 2023 at Duke!

Ramadan is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. Muslims observe Ramadan as a month of fasting, reflection, and prayer. Many Muslims will fast from food & drink (including water) from dawn until some time around sunset. We estimate that nearly 400 of the Muslims at Duke will participate in the CML's Ramadan programming.

Ramadan Programs

Halaqa (speaker programming)

Each night, we'll have a guest speaker discussing a different topic in Islam. We'll announce the speakers each week on our social media and newsletter!

Maghrib prayer

Maghrib Iqamah will be 15 minutes after sunset. We'll have one shift of Maghrib prayer in Brodhead Multipurpose Room 067.

Iftar will be at The Skillet in the Brodhead Center. The CML has worked with Duke Dining to create special menus for Iftar Mon-Thurs. We'll have different cuisines like Mediterranean, Jamaican, Soul Food, Hispanic, Italian and more!

Registration is required. For the first 30-45 minutes, only registered people will be served Iftar. Afterwards, it'll be first come, first serve. This is to ensure Muslims who break their fast later than sunset can get food.

On the day of each Iftar, the link to register will go live on the CML's Duke Groups page at 1:30 pm. We'll also post the link to our Instagram story each day!

The Center for Muslim Life would like to thank this year's iftar sponsors: Pratt School of Engineering, Duke International Student Center, Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture, The Freeman Family Program Fund of Jewish Life at Duke, Interfaith Roundtable at Duke Chapel, Graduate and Professional Student Services, Malak and Jaffar Raza Family

Isha'a and Taraweeh prayers will begin at the Center for Muslim Life at 9:30pm every evening throughout the month.
